I've
always been into geeky things. For me though, they weren't always categorized
as "geeky" or "nerdy" until much later in life. It really
was just a norm for me. I guess what I really want to express is the fact that
for some people, video games are more than just a fun thing to do to pass the
time.
Some people don't get that video games (we'll use Zelda as
an example) are a part of how we grew up. We know the story of the brave teenage
boy who travels across Hyrule in search of the princess who is captured by the
evil villain. We've spent countless hours in front of the television
trying to figure out the puzzles, and we've learned so much along the way from
these characters. We've grown to love them with a passion that leaves us with
the desire to learn and immerse ourselves even more in the culture of the game,
and not care who else thinks we're weird.
One of my good friend's from high school and I used to have these
intense conversations about the in-depth aspects of the game (i.e Are the
Goddesses truly good?) and it was so FUN. We would be so
excited to learn more about the ways of life of a Hylian, and maybe that was
just the super nerd in me at that time but I didn't really care. Either way I
invested in my favorite characters and I never wanted to let them go, not even
the ones that I disliked. This is still true today for all of the new fandoms I
have added to my list.
The same can be said for many other popular (and not so popular)
fan bases. You read the books, watch the movies and suddenly you are totally
invested in all the characters until the end. I mean, you can't just leave them
hanging! I know at least for me, I've always had this wondering mind filled
with the hope that these other places could be a possibility.
Nerds and fellow Geeks, we've all come so far. Don't let people
who don't understand discourage or take away your passion. Personally, I think
that those of us who have been classified as "geeks" or
"nerds" are some of the most dedicated people in the world, and
I say that is so beautiful and inspiring.
alright, comment your opinions, or Tweet or talk to me on tumblr!
